The Office

<< to What's New

Now that things have stabilized after moving between offices (we held a welcoming reception yesterday), I thought I'd put up a few pictures of my office.

This is me at my desk... The reason I'm not in a shirt (and/or tie) is because its Saturday and I've just biked in. I'm not sure why the picture is flipped around horizontally; it might be an artifact of the self-portrait mode in my phone.

A door is great because you can block out noise when you need to, or indicate you don't want to be disturbed.

Here's a shot from the hallway looking in; you can see my dying plant. Its amazing how great having a window feels. Getting some natural light makes an incredible difference in alertness and mood. The sun makes it hard to get a good picture with my crap phone camera though.

If you look out the window, you can see an apartment building across the street. I considered renting a spot there, but there were so many people interested, the super decided to hold an open house instead of showing the apartment to everyone individually and the price went up about $50/month so I decided against it.

I'm only on the ninth floor, but Kitchener-Waterloo is so flat and the buildings are so low that you can see incredibly far.

At the end of February there is still plenty of snow on the ground, as you can see here. There was some stubborn snow and ice that lasted until mid- or late-March, if I remember correctly.

Finally, this is my bike parked outside the building. I took this picture when it was still moderately cold out (at the end of March) so not many people were riding in yet. Today I was ten minutes later than usual and all the good parking spots were already taken. I had to move someone's bicycle over a bit in order to squeeze in.

When I have my bike all loaded up with a change of clothes, shoes and laptop, it feels like I'm driving an SUV. I can really feel the weight over the back wheel, but I suppose that does help with braking. I've added a huge amount of weight to my bike to make commuting more convenient (rack ang bags, kick stand, front and rear full fenders, front and rear lights and reflectors, bell, U-lock and holder, combination chain lock) so if I ride without bags and locks it feels like I'm flying.
